Manchester United standing firm on Gabriel Heinze |
MANCHESTER UNITED believe Liverpool are wasting their time by asking the Premier League to intervene in the Gabriel Heinze saga as the row between the two North West rivals escalated yesterday. But the Anfield outfit remain confident the Argentina international will be given the green light to make the controversial transfer out of Old Trafford. Liverpool have written to the league asking them to arbitrate over the row between Heinze and United, with the player taking legal advice to discover whether a document signed by United chief executive David Gill indicating he can leave for a set fee is binding. Gill has since backtracked by stating that while there is no written evidence United are within their rights to block the move, Heinze was told verbally he cannot join a Premier League club.
United rejected a bid from Liverpool that met the fee set in the letter, and while Newcastle United and Juventus are also interested, Heinze is keen on a move to Anfield. However, United are desperate to prevent the 29-year-old left-back becoming the first player to move directly between the clubs since Phil Chisnall in 1964. Heinze returns to training on Monday, although it’s clear he player has no future at Old Trafford. United are already involved in a wrangle with the Premier League over their attempts to sign Carlos Tevez from West Ham United. But the prospect of further intervention from competition officials has been laughed off by Sir Alex Ferguson. “That will take years,” said the Scot. “There is no update on Gaby’s position. “He is due back to training next Monday.” |
