Liverpool close in on Rodriguez

Argentina and Atletico Madrid’s Maxi Rodriguez is edging closer to an Anfield move.

The player is keen to move to the Premier League in a bid to ensure he goes to the World Cup next summer. The sticking point has been over pay – with Liverpool’s coffers empty the player looks likely to take a significant pay cut to move to the reds.

Most rumours seem to be that the player will arrive on a loan deal until the end of the season.

The 29 year old can operate on the wing or as an attacking midfielder and in his 8 years spell in La Liga (at Espanyol and Atletico) he has scored 58 times in just under 250 appearances.

He has been a peripheral figure for Atletico of late, although he did score 4 goals in the 6-0 win over Marbella in the Spanish Cup in November.

Liverpool decline £5m bid for Yossi Benayoun but Albert Riera may leave

Liverpool have wasted no time in initiating a much needed shake-up at the club with negotiations for Bordeaux's Marouane Chamakh and Atletico Madrid's Maxi Rodriguez believed to be in the advanced stages, while Andriy Voronin looks likely to be leaving.

And while manager Rafael Benitez appears untroubled by the potential loss of Riera, according to the Mail, the Spaniard will not allow Benayoun to leave.

Meanwhile, it seems the curtain is about to fall on another Anfield career with out-of-favour defender Andrea Dossena on the verge of a £4.5m transfer to Napoli, after his agent claimed the deal had been held up by the bad weather in the north west which closed airports in the region.

The Italy international has failed to establish himself in the first team following his £7m move from Udinese in the summer of 2008 and he has made just five appearances this season.

"I believe the player will arrive in Napoli tomorrow," agent Roberto La Floria told Tuttomercatoweb.

"At the moment there are logistical problems - that is to say he can't leave Liverpool because of the snow.

"The player will arrive on a permanent basis with a contract for four and a half years."
