Cardiff City pushed Liverpool harder than most expected in an entertaining Carling Cup tie at Anfield, and Benitez praised the visitors for their efforts whilst hinting that his side’s finishing ability needs to improve.

"In the first half I felt we played well and had a lot of chances to score, but they were working hard too," said Benitez.

"In the second-half we started well and I think that was what made the difference.

"They got back into it with the set-piece and so in the end it was good for us to see Gerrard score.

"We needed to score the third but in the end we are happy to win the game."

The Reds boss also revealed what he said to Robbie Fowler after he stepped on to the pitch at the final whistle to speak to his former striker.

"I just wished him all the best," said Benitez.

"I have very good memories of his time here. He was good for us and his experience helped us.

"So I just wished him all the best for the rest of the season."
