Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez says he would not sanction the sale of star striker Fernando Torres at any price. The 24-year-old Spain international has been an unqualified success since his arrival from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2007, scoring 36 goals in 56 appearances for the Reds in all competitions. However, the Euro 2008 star had recently been linked with a January move to Manchester City, but Benitez has made it clear that he will not allow Torres to move on. He told the News of the World: "I do not want to put a price on him, because people will want to think I want to sell him and that is not the case, so I will not say any price. "I'm sure all the players have a value but not Torres. He is priceless to us, he is unbuyable. "I would not want to swap Fernando with anyone else in the world, because he is my player and I'm very pleased with him. "There are good players in Europe and all the way around the world, but better than Torres? No."

Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has admitted to being hurt at being told that he could leave the club in the summer, as the Reds tried to snap up Aston Villa's Gareth Barry. The 26-year-old was expected to be sold to Italian powerhouses Juventus to fund the move for England international Barry, but that deal eventually failed to materialise. Alonso told the Daily Express: "I prefer not to think too much about how I was treated. It was a new situation for me, something I had never experienced before. "It is a fact that any player can be really happy where he is, but if the club don't want him, he has to accept it. There is not much you can do. "It is not always easy to detach yourself from things like that, but I accept it is part of football and the main thing is it was all resolved and I am now playing regularly. "I was really pleased that I was able to continue my Liverpool career."Labels: xabi alonso
