Andriy Voronin gives Liverpool advantage
By Andy HooperToulouse 0 Liverpool 1
Andriy Voronin struck late in the first half to give Liverpool a 1-0 advantage to take into the second leg of their Champions League qualification tie with Toulouse.
Manager Rafael Benitez made six changes to the team that beat Aston Villa on the opening day of the Premier League season last Saturday.
Striker Peter Crouch was given a starting role, while Yossi Benayoun, Sami Hyypia, Andriy Voronin, Ryan Babel and Javier Mascherano also came into the side.
With Jermaine Pennant at home, Daniel Agger, John Arne Riise, Fernando Torres, Xabi Alonso and Dirk Kuyt all rested to the bench.
Temperatures above 90 degrees kept the game at a low tempo, but Voronin's spectacular 30-yard effort after 43 minutes silenced boisterous home fans watching their team in European competition for the first time in 20 years.
Preserving their energy, the visitors remained in control after the break to safeguard their lead ahead of the return leg at Anfield on Aug 28.
