Rafael Benitez claims there is a "chance" Liverpool talisman Jamie Carragher could return to action against Portsmouth this weekend.
The 29-year-old defender is back in light training after recovering from a rib injury he picked up at Sunderland last month.
The Reds boss is cautious over Carragher's fitness and will wait until the end of the week before deciding if the player will feature at Fratton Park.
The Spaniard told the club's official website: "We must be careful with Carra, and we will wait until the end of the week to see how well he is.
"He is running again and he will do more training and then maybe we can see if he has a chance to play at the weekend. At this moment, it's still too early to say."
Meanwhile, Benitez was delighted to see Steven Gerrard come through England's clash with Israel unscathed.
The Anfield captain is struggling with a broken toe sustained last month and apparently did not require a painkilling injection to play for the Three Lions.
Gerrard could feature against Pompey if he reports no ill effects from Wednesday's Group E clash with Russia.
"Steven did not need an injection and the fact he played with no problems and did well is good news for England, but even better news for Liverpool, thinking about our game with Portsmouth," added Benitez.
