STEVE FINNAN today praised Argentinean pair Gabriel Paletta and Emiliano Insua for their positive impact on the Liverpool team in the closing weeks of the season. The Anfield right-back has been impressed with their performances in two tough away games at Portsmouth and Fulham and believes they can both look forward to playing their part as the club looks to challenge for honours next season and beyond. He said: “They both did very well at Fulham, particularly when you think of how difficult it can be coming into a team which has been changed quite dramatically. “There have been seven or eight changes but they have both slotted in really well. |
“Obviously, Insua is a young lad who a lot of people don’t know too much about and Paletta has played a bit more.
“But it is important that they come in and get this experience because then they can be used even more.
“Next season we will be looking to challenge in all competitions so they should be looking to play a part in that and play even more games.”
Meanwhile, Finnan insists the Liverpool players are still keen to finish third in the Premiership, despite having already sewn up a place in the Champions League final and ensured qualification for next season’s European competition.
Should Liverpool equal or better Arsenal’s result this weekend they will tie up third place in the league.
And Finnan says all the players are focused on achieving that target.
He said: “There is still a lot to play for and we want to finish as high as we can.
“I know the team has changed quite a bit in the last couple of league games but the teams which have been put out should have been good enough.
“It was disappointing to lose at Fulham but there’s no doubt the boss is looking ahead to the Champions League final so it’s a chance for players to come in and show what they can do.
“But it is also important that some of the other lads are able to rest and steer clear of injuries so they are fresh for the final.”
