JERMAINE Pennant’s agent today denied the Reds star had been on a 24-hour booze bender before collapsing on a flight. Passengers on a flight from Spain to London were shocked when the 24-year-old winger passed out in the aisle 30 minutes after take-off. Pennant, who had been on holiday with pals including Charlton player Jonathan Fortune, collapsed going back to his seat after rushing to the loo. Flight attendants helped him to spare seats near the emergency exit and gave him oxygen. |
National newspapers claimed the footballer was suffering the after-effects of drinking too heavily.
But today Pennant’s agent Sky Andrew said dehydration caused the player to collapse.
He said: “The story has been exaggerated. Jermaine did faint, but it wasn’t because he was drinking all day.
“Easyjet will tell you it was a case of dehydration. He was on holiday with Jonathan Fortune and he’s a sensible lad.
“Jermaine doesn’t need publicity like this.”
Pennant had gone on holiday last Thursday with a group of pals and his girlfriend to Marbella.
They were reported to have gone straight to the airport after a night-out and Pennant boarded an Easyjet flight to Stanstead.
Pennant’s career has been dogged by controversy off the pitch.
In 2003, he was kicked out of the England U-21 squad for breaking a curfew.
Then, in 2005, he served a month in prison while on loan in the Midlands from Arsenal for driving while banned.
