KOP legend Robbie Fowler has vacated his Liverpool striking role and tipped Fernando Torres to be the perfect replacement. Veteran Fowler, who officially left the club when his contract expired last week, is excited about the arrival of the Spain hitman at Anfield. Fowler, now looking for a new club, admitted to still being a big Liverpool fan who hopes Torres can step into his scoring boots. Fowler said: "His goals record has been fantastic in Spain. He has scored plenty of goals for his country as well. I think he will be a great player for Liverpool. "I am a Liverpool fan and I hope he brings the championship to Liverpool. "Since I have been playing, we've never won that and, as I said before, I am a fan, so I want Liverpool to win everything. "Signing players of this calibre will only help the club to get in a position where they can challenge for titles." Fowler also revealed he has had no offers since being released by Liverpool. The 32-year-old former England striker has been linked with moves to MLS side New England Revolution and Australian outfit Sydney FC. But Fowler insists he has yet to hear from any club, adding: "Obviously, not everyone can get a club and I'm in that boat. "My record speaks for itself. If I get offers, I get offers." Asked whether he expected to be playing Premier League football next season, Fowler - the division's fourth highest scorer - said: "We'll have to wait and see." Fowler admitted he did not play as many games as he would have liked after his dramatic return to Anfield 18 months ago, but added: "I was just made up to be back at Liverpool. It's a club close to my heart. It was great being back and I wouldn't have swapped that for the world." He tipped champions Manchester United and Chelsea to be the teams to beat next season but backed Liverpool to put up a strong challenge for the title. "It's going to be a hard job to catch those two again," Fowler said. "But Liverpool have got the right man in charge and with the right players and a little bit of luck, hopefully we'll be talking at the end of the season about Liverpool being champions." One player coming back to Anfield, goalkeeper Scott Carson is keen for talks with Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez over his future. The England goalkeeper returned to the club this summer following a season-long loan at Charlton Athletic and is eager to find out what his first team chances are. Liverpool have turned down a bid from Bolton Wanderers to take Carson on loan next season but following Jerzy Dudek's Anfield exit, the 21-year-old former Leeds keeper is expected to start the campaign as understudy to Spaniard Pepe Reina. Carson clearly has worries about his international prospects if he spends most of the season on the bench. If Carson persists with his fears of inactivity - Dudek only played two league games last term and six in all - Benitez may well have to revise his plans and give new signing Nikolay Mikhaylov, 19, already a Bulgaria full international, more opportunities. Many observers feel Carson will not be willing to see a whole season virtually wasted ahead of the European Championship finals next summer. Meanwhile, Liverpool are also believed to have snapped up Barcelona striker Dani Pachuco, 16, for around £300,000. |
