By Vicki Hodges and agenciesLiverpool captain Steven Gerrard will face Chelsea on Sunday despite having a hairline toe fracture, but has been ruled out of England's friendly against Germany next week.
Gerrard sustained the injury during Liverpool's Champions League third qualifying round 1-0 first leg win in Toulouse yesterday.
Manager Rafael Benitez is ready to allow Gerrard to feature in Liverpool's Premier League match against Chelsea at Anfield this weekend, but has said he will not play for the national team.
Benitez said: "He will train but he will not be able to join up with England. I will talk to Steve McClaren and I am sure he will understand.
"We have been told by our doctors that this is not a big risk but he will clearly then need to rest after the Chelsea match."
Gerrard was injured in a clash with midfielder Pantxi Sireix yesterday and, although he tried to play on, he was eventually replaced in the 61st minute by Mohamed Sissoko.
Gerrard's injury is the latest casualty to hit England coach McClaren. Wayne Rooney, John Terry, Jonathan Woodgate and Ledley King have already been ruled out of the friendly next Wednesday, while striker Michael Owen has yet to play competitively this season.
Germany, meanwhile, will be without Michael Ballack for the England game. Coach Joachim Low has been forced to call up the uncapped 20-year-old Sami Khedira as a replacement.
Arsenal's Jens Lehmann is named as first-choice goalkeeper, while Khedira's team-mate at Stuttgart Serdar Tasci, a defender, has been named in a national squad for the first time. Torsten Frings and Tim Borowski, Lukas Podolski and Mario Gomez all miss the game.
Squad: T Hildebrand (Valencia), J Lehmann (Arsenal); A Friedrich (Hertha Berlin), C Fritz (Werder Bremen), M Jansen (Bayern Munich), P Lahm (Bayern Munich), P Mertesacker (Werder Bremen), C Metzelder (Real Madrid), S Tasci (Stuttgart); R Hilbert (Stuttgart), T Hitzlsperger (Stuttgart), S Khedira (Stuttgart), S Rolfes (Bayer Leverkusen), B Schneider (Bayer Leverkusen), B Schweinsteiger (Bayern Munich), P Trochowski (Hamburg); P Helmes (Cologne), S Kiessling (Bayer Leverkusen), M Klose (Bayern Munich), K Kuranyi (Schalke)
