Liverpool climbed up to second place after goals from Momo Sissoko and Andriy Voronin earned them a 2-0 away win over Sunderland.
The visitors could have been ahead in the first minute, when Greg Halford's poor backpass was seized upon by Voronin, whose close-range shot was bravely blocked by £9million man Craig Gordon.
But they broke the deadlock on 37 minutes, when Jermaine Pennant and Voronin combined to set up Sissoko, who rattled a low piledriver into the bottom right-hand corner of Gordon's net.
Gordon pulled off a stunning low save to keep Torres' bullet header out of the net on 45 - and went on to deny both Reds frontmen with a string of saves after the break.
He was beaten for the second time on 87, though, when Voronin smashed a low strike home to hint that Liverpool now have a squad capable of a serious title assault
