Fowler to make Anfield return - PA Sport

Fowler to make Anfield return - PA Sport
Robbie Fowler is set for a quick return to Anfield after his Cardiff side were drawn at Liverpool in the fourth round of the Carling Cup. The 32-year-old left the Merseyside club for the second time at the end of last season when he was not offered a new contract by manager Rafael Benitez, but he remains massively popular among the Reds faithful. Cardiff won the race for his signature and he has scored four goals in five starts for the Bluebirds, including a brace in their midweek Carling Cup win over West Brom. Coventry, who sensationally sent Manchester United crashing out of the competition at Old Trafford this week, are rewarded with a home draw against Premier League West Ham. Of the three other Coca-Cola Championship sides left in the cup, Leicester have perhaps the toughest task after being drawn at Chelsea, 4-0 victors over Hull. Sheffield United's assignment is only marginally less testing with Arsene Wenger's precocious Arsenal youngsters the visitors to Bramall Lane. Blackpool travel to face Tottenham, while League One Luton, who dispatched Charlton this week, host top flight Everton at Kenilworth Road. The remaining two ties are both all-Premier League affairs as Portsmouth entertain Blackburn and Sven-Goran Eriksson's Manchester City make the short journey to the Reebok Stadium to take on Bolton. Carling Cup fourth round draw: Luton v Everton Portsmouth v Blackburn Chelsea v Leicester Sheffield United v Arsenal Tottenham v Blackpool Bolton v Manchester City Coventry v West Ham Liverpool v Cardiff Matches will be played on the week of October 29

Fowler waits on move

Fowler waits on move

By Peter ORourke - Created on 18 Jul 2007

Robbie Fowler's agent says the former Liverpool legend is in no rush to make a decision on his future.

Fowler is weighing up his options after being released by Liverpool at the end of last season.

Cardiff, Leicester and Sydney FC have all expressed an interest in signing the former Leeds and Manchester City hit-man.

Cardiff are believed be leading the chase for the prolific forward, but Fowler's representative George Scott says the player will not rush into making a decision on who to join

"To be honest, Robbie is enjoying the little bit of freedom he's got at the moment," Scott told the Western Mail.

"He is not in a mood to be rushed. He is considering eight offers at the moment, but the phone is always ringing and there is plenty of interest.

"We've been forced to say thanks, but no thanks to a few of them.

"I wouldn't want to put the offers in any kind of order yet. Robbie is his own man, he will make up his mind about what is right for him and especially what's right for his family.

"Robbie's got six weeks really and there is no saying he won't take that time before putting pen to paper and finally decide where he's going.

"As I say, offers are coming in all the time and there is the option there to wait until more clubs come in and decide then.

"Sydney is still in there, we felt we should go out there at least. They had come to Liverpool and we thought it polite to take up their offer to go there.

"Cardiff's bid is getting the same serious consideration as the others. We know the chairman, Peter Ridsdale, is an ambitious man. I know him and he's always impressed me as a person, a businessman and just a thorough football man at heart."

Meanwhile, Cardiff have handed trials to former Manchester United youngster Aaron Burns and ex-Nottingham Forest man Patrece Liburd.

The duo played in the friendly win at Chippenham on Tuesday as they look to win moves to Ninian Park.

Foxes follow Fowler

Foxes follow Fowler

By Peter Fraser - Created on 16 Jul 2007

Leicester City chairman Milan Mandaric has confirmed Robbie Fowler as the club's top target.

Fowler has held talks with Sydney FC about a possible move to Australia, and Cardiff City are also reportedly interested in the Liverpool legend, but Mandaric admits a desire to bring the 32-year-old to The Walkers Stadium.

The Foxes, who have already brought in Carl Cort and are reportedly close to a £2million agreement for Birmingham forward DJ Campbell, are hoping to continue to bolster their attack as they look to fire their way back to the Premier League.

"We are still looking for more firepower up front and Fowler could give us that," Mandaric told the Leicester Mercury.

"I have been talking with his representatives and we know there is competition for him but it is not always about money.

"I think we would be the right club for someone who is really looking for the right challenge.

"We will see what happens through the pre-season and into August, but I said this would be a major rebuilding job for the club and that is still the case."

Reports in Wales, meanwhile, claim Fowler has verbally agreed to join Cardiff and will settle on personal terms upon his return from Australia.

Vale approach Fowler

Vale approach Fowler

By Peter Fraser - Created on 11 Jul 2007

Port Vale have confirmed they have made an approach to sign former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler.

The League One outfit have joined a host of clubs chasing Fowler, who has also played for Leeds United and Manchester City.

Leicester, Cardiff and Sydney FC are reportedly interested in Fowler, 32, who became a free agent at the end of last season after his contract with Liverpool expired.

However, Port Vale chairman Bill Bratt hopes the lure of regular first-team football could attract the former England forward.

"We've approached Robbie Fowler's agent to see whether he would be interested in playing for Port Vale," said Bratt.

"We can offer him regular football and at his age that may be what he is looking for.

"We obviously can't afford to pay him what other clubs can but he's a very wealthy man anyway and we hope he may want to play for the pleasure of it.

"You don't go from being a brilliant player to a bad player overnight and we think he would be a superb addition for us.

"It's a chance for us as far as I'm concerned. We've asked the question and if the answer's no, it's no."

Fowler's agent George Scott told the Sentinel: "I've had many a good night in Stoke-on-Trent, so you never know.

"Robbie is ruling nothing out, especially if it is an ambitious club and he can see himself going there and taking them up to a new level."

Fowler has scored 162 Premier League goals and has also netted seven international goals in 26 England appearances.

Cardiff join hunt to sign Fowler
Robbie Fowler wants prospective clubs to promise first-team football
Robbie Fowler wants prospective clubs to promise first-team football
Cardiff City are trying to persuade former England striker Robbie Fowler to join the Championship club.

Bluebirds chairman Peter Ridsdale had previously refused to confirm they had approached the 32-year-old, who was released by Liverpool this summer.

But Ridsdale told the Liverpool FC website: "We have offered an attractive package and are hopeful Robbie will decide to come to Cardiff City."

Cardiff face competition from other clubs, thought to include Rangers.

The Scottish Premier League giants, and their Glasgow rivals Celtic, are understood to have sounded out Fowler about a move north of the border.

But Fowler's adviser George Scott believes Scotland is an unlikely destination for Fowler.

We have got eight offers on the table and Robbie Fowler is considering the lot of them
Robbie Fowler's adviser George Scott

"I can't see Rangers or Celtic being an option. They have each got too many strikers on their books and would need to offload a couple first," said Scott.

"The one thing Robbie knows he wants is regular first-team football.

"We have got eight offers on the table and Robbie is considering the lot of them.

"Could it be at Cardiff? Why not? I think Cardiff, if they have the ambition, is the sort of place Robbie would thrive at."

However, Scott says he has yet to receive a formal approach from Cardiff, who could struggle to afford Fowler unless there is much goodwill from the player.

The forward is financially secure, thanks to shrewd property investments, and it is possible he could take a drastic drop in wages from the £50,000 a week he was on at Anfield.

But failing that, Cardiff would either need to shatter their wage structure - which is unlikely given the financial constraints caused by building a new stadium at Leckwith - or put together a huge sponsorship package.

A more likely destination at the moment appears to be Australia, with Australian FourFourTwo reporting that Fowler is expected to travel Down Under next week for talks with Sydney FC club officials.

Major League Soccer side New England Revolution are also thought to be courting Fowler, who won 26 caps for England and scored seven goals.

One thing that may count in Cardiff's favour is that Fowler has a young family and may not want to drastically uproot them by moving abroad, far away from friends and family.

He made his Liverpool debut as an 18-year-old in 1993, scoring 171 goals in 330 games before joining Leeds for £11m in 2001 and then Manchester City for £6m in 2003.

Fowler returned for a second spell at Anfield in January 2006, although his starting appearances were limited.

Fowler waits for offers

Fowler waits for offers

By Mark Buckingham - Created on 2 Jul 2007

Robbie Fowler admits he has yet to receive any offers since being released by Liverpool.

The former England international did not have his contract renewed by Rafa Benitez after scoring seven goals in 23 appearances last season.

The 32-year-old is keen to find a new club, but concedes he is still waiting for the chance to discuss a move to another team.

"I'm between jobs," Fowler told Sky Sports News. "I actually thought I'd have a few options, but at the minute I've not, nothing has happened as yet.

"There should be interest in a few weeks for me, I think. Obviously I don't want to blow my own trumpet, as in this day and age, lots of players are in my situation and not everyone can get a club.

"I'm in that boat, so we'll just have to wait and see.

"I'm confident in what I can do. I'm 32 and not past it by any means. I feel as though I'm capable of still doing a job, I'm just waiting for that phone call to get any offers."

Fowler wonders whether any interested clubs are being deterred by his past injury troubles, but he insists he is currently in good shape.

He added: "I've not got a bad record in the Premier League. I know I've had a few injuries and people might be scared off by that, I don't know.

"I never played as much as I wanted to last year, but I kept myself in good shape and I think I'm as fit now as what I have been for a long time.

"I don't think I need to prove myself to anyone, my record speaks for itself. I'm not going to stand here and say 'come and get me' because I've played at the top level for 10 or 15 years now and I think that says it all."
