Finnan commits to Reds

Finnan commits to Reds
Monday Jul 23 2007 08:34

Republic of Ireland international Steve Finnan has pledged his future to Liverpool by agreeing a new three-year deal with the Reds.

The 31-year-old is currently with the rest of Rafa Benitez's squad on the club's pre-season tour of Hong Kong, and will put pen to paper on the new contract when he returns to Merseyside.

Finnan moved to Anfield from Fulham four years ago and has made 182 first-team appearances for the club.

He becomes the sixth first-team regular to agree new deals this summer, following the lead of Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Xabi Alonso, Pepe Reina and Momo Sissoko.

Meanwhile, Benitez has confirmed that he is still interested in signing Manchester United defender Gabriel Heinze.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said last week that he would not let the Argentina international move to Liverpool, but Benitez has not given up hope of landing the defender.

He said: "We made an offer which they rejected. The lawyers are now working on it and so we have to wait. He's a good player."
