Reds defender admits disappointment

Finnan: Disappointment

Steve Finnan admits he is at a loss to explain Liverpool's recent run of poor form.

The Reds started the season in style, recording a crushing 6-0 victory over Derby on their way to the top of the Premier League.

However, over recent weeks Rafa Benitez's men have endured a slump in results which was epitomised by last Wednesday's UEFA Champions League home defeat to Marseille.

Liverpool were also fortunate to avoid their second Anfield loss in quick succession when an injury time Fernando Torres header rescued a point in the 2-2 draw with Tottenham on Sunday and Finnan has admitted his frustrations.

Difficult

"There's a feeling of overall disappointment because we didn't play well again and conceding two goals either side of half-time made it difficult for us," Finnan told the Liverpool Echo.

"But it's still early days and we're still unbeaten in the league."

However, Finnan - who set up Torres' late salvation operation - is optimistic the Spanish striker's equaliser will maintain spirits on Merseyside.

"I just swung it in with my left foot hoping someone would get on the end of it and Nando showed his quality in the air," Finnan added. "That helps confidence.

Unbeaten

"It's nice to be unbeaten in the league and the fact that we are still unbeaten and still getting results, even though we're not playing well - apart from Wednesday night obviously - will help our confidence.

"We were relieved to score the late equaliser, but also disappointed to drop two points.

"We thought we weren't going to get anything from the game so for Fernando to pop up with a great header was a real relief."

It's the best squad - Steve Finnan

It's the best squad - Steve Finnan

Aug 29 2007

Liverpool Echo

PETER CROUCH scored for Liverpool and talked of the “difficulties” Rafael Benitez has in keeping all his players happy - while Steve Finnan insisted this is the best Anfield squad he had been involved with.

The contrasting comments from within the Liverpool squad were evident last night as Liverpool showed their strength in depth.

Liverpool outplayed Toulouse, winning 4-0 on the night and 5-0 on aggregate.

Full-back Finnan said: “This is by far the best squad I have been involved in here, the boss has two players for every position and it is keeping everyone on their toes.”

Crouch said: “It’s going to get difficult but as long as I get as many games as I’d like it’s okay.

FINNAN: WE'LL BE READY FOR CHELSEA

FINNAN: WE'LL BE READY FOR CHELSEA Jimmy Rice 16 August 2007
Steve Finnan insists he and his teammates will be more than ready for the showdown with Chelsea on Sunday despite a tough midweek game in the searing heat of Toulouse.
The Republic of Ireland international admits conditions during Wednesday's Champions League qualifier were some of the hardest he's ever played in. However, he believes the Liverpool squad can have no excuses when Jose Mourinho's men come to town. "It was one of the hottest games I've played in for a long time," Finnan told Liverpoolfc.tv. "There were some tired legs out there towards the end, it was a good work out for us. "Yes, we'll feel it on Thursday, but we're not playing until Sunday – that's one more day than we usually get, so we'll be fine by the time Chelsea comes around. They've played during midweek too, so there'll be no excuses." On the significance of this weekend's fixture, the right-back added: "It's such a long season, so we're not going to get carried away if we win, and by the same token it's not the end of the season if we lose. "But of course Sunday is massive. Everyone has been talking about getting a good start, and yes, we've got one win under our belts, but one win alone does not make a good start. We need to get as many points as we can in the first half a dozen games or so. "As well as that, Chelsea are one of our main rivals; we want to finish above them this season because they are a good team. "We can take a lot of confidence from the fact we beat them in the same fixture last year, and we've got more options all over the pitch now. We're at home, so we will try to attack them and win the game." Sunday's game will be the 16th meeting between the two sides in just over three years. With so much water under the bridge, a lot has been made of the rivalry between the two sets of players. However, Finnan insists it's nothing different to that between all the top clubs. "There is a lot of rivalry between the players, that's only natural, especially when we've played them as much as we have over recent seasons. But it's no different to when we play the likes of Manchester United or Everton." As for Liverpool's chances of progressing to the Champions League proper following the 1-0 victory over Toulouse, Finnan believes he and his teammates cannot afford to take anything for granted. "That was a really good result for us, especially considering they beat Lyon at home at the weekend. We got an away goal and a clean sheet, and that's what we would have hoped for before the match. "It puts us in a great position, but we can't take anything for granted. We've still got to finish the job at Anfield."

Steve Finnan: We will iron out the flaws in our game

Steve Finnan: We will iron out the flaws in our game

Jul 30 2007

by Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

Steve Finnan

STEVE FINNAN is convinced Liverpool will iron out any lingering flaws ahead of the new season as they prepare for their final warm-up games this weekend.

After completing a gruelling trip from Hong Kong, the team will head to Holland for the Rotterdam tournament.

Friday’s penalty defeat in the Asia Cup exposed weaknesses which were all too apparent last season as Liverpool dominated the game but failed to turn superiority into goals.

It’s hoped the summer investment in attacking talent will change the fortunes of Rafa Benitez’s side, and Finnan dismissed claims the loss to Portsmouth is a taste of what’s to come.

“The game against Portsmouth was similar to a lot of games last season,” admitted the defender.

“If Premiership points had been at stake, we’d have been very frustrated not taking three points. Even losing a friendly was frustrating. We had the chances and they only had one when Pepe made a good save.

“But overall we have to remember these games are all about fitness. It’s always nice to win, but the Premier League is what’s important.

“The new lads have had no time at all to settle really, but we know they’re all really good players. The squad is improving all the time, and it’s certainly better now than at any time I’ve been at the club.

“It’s just about working on a few things here and there now before the season starts properly.”

Finnan feels part of Liverpool’s problems away from home last season were psychological, as the failure to punish sides when they were on the rack became a habit they couldn’t shake off.

“There were a lot games last season when we had all the play, didn’t score, and maybe we’d be thinking here we go again,” he said.

“A lot of teams are forced to defend against us, and we’ve got to take that dominance we have in many games, try and nick a goal and keep at them.

“That relieves the pressure on the defence, too. I can remember a lot of games where we’ve dominated and only given away one or two chances but conceded goals and lost points.

“You have to get in front when you’re on top.”

Finnan will pen a new deal tomorrow after agreeing a two-year extension, which may become three, depending on clauses.

“It will be great to get it signed.”

Finnan welcomes competition

Finnan welcomes competition

By Peter Fraser - Created on 24 Jul 2007

Steve Finnan is confident he can see off competition for his Liverpool first-team place after committing himself to the club for the rest of his career.

Finnan, who agreed a new three-year deal with the Reds on Monday, has welcomed the arrival of fresh faces at Anfield following heavy spending from manager Rafa Benitez.

The right-back is likely to be competing with Alvaro Arbeloa for a Liverpool starting role over the coming season now the Spaniard has settled in following his January transfer window move from Deportivo La Coruna.

Finnan welcomes the competition for places as a positive for the club, but he also remains confident he will still be first choice for Benitez.

"I have been here four years now and during that time a lot of players have come and gone," Finnan told Liverpool's official website.

"It is a squad game now and competition for places is never a problem but I am confident I can continue to hold down a regular place in the side."

Finnan is currently in Honk Kong with Liverpool, who are participating in the Asia Trophy, and he admits he cannot wait to get back to Merseyside to put pen-to-paper on his new deal.

"I cannot wait to sign the contract once we are back home," Finnan added.

"I am in my thirties now and there's no doubt in my mind whatsoever that this is where I want to play for the rest of my career.

"I was never worried about not being offered a new deal to be honest.

"The manager assured me that I was in his plans and once talks resumed everything was tied up really quickly."

Finnan has followed the likes of Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Jose Reina, Mohamed Sissoko and Xabi Alonso in agreeing new long-term contracts and he believes this is an indication of bright times at Anfield.

"Everyone wants to stay and be part of what could be an exciting future. With the new owners coming, the new players we have signed and all the young players around the place there is a lot of expectation," Finnan concluded.

Finnan commits to Reds

Finnan commits to Reds
Monday Jul 23 2007 08:34

Republic of Ireland international Steve Finnan has pledged his future to Liverpool by agreeing a new three-year deal with the Reds.

The 31-year-old is currently with the rest of Rafa Benitez's squad on the club's pre-season tour of Hong Kong, and will put pen to paper on the new contract when he returns to Merseyside.

Finnan moved to Anfield from Fulham four years ago and has made 182 first-team appearances for the club.

He becomes the sixth first-team regular to agree new deals this summer, following the lead of Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Xabi Alonso, Pepe Reina and Momo Sissoko.

Meanwhile, Benitez has confirmed that he is still interested in signing Manchester United defender Gabriel Heinze.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said last week that he would not let the Argentina international move to Liverpool, but Benitez has not given up hope of landing the defender.

He said: "We made an offer which they rejected. The lawyers are now working on it and so we have to wait. He's a good player."

Steve Finnan signs up as double deal close

Steve Finnan signs up as double deal close

Jul 12 2007

by Ian Doyle, Liverpool Daily Post

Steve Finnan

STEVE FINNAN is set to become the latest player to commit his long-term future to Liverpool – with the Anfield club expected to tie up their £17million double swoop for Yossi Benayoun and Ryan Babel today.

Highly-rated 20-year-old forward Babel was on Merseyside yesterday to agree terms on a five-year deal and pass a medical.

Although Liverpool and Ajax have yet to decide on a fee for the versatile attacker – who can play up front or on either wing – agreement is expected to be reached today on a price of around £12m.

Liverpool have already negotiated a package understood to be worth £5m for Benayoun, who travelled north last night and will have a medical today.

No problems are anticipated with either transfer, and Liverpool are hopeful of unveiling the pair before the end of the week.

Rafael Benitez believes Israeli midfielder Benayoun can prove a ready-made replacement for the recently departed Luis Garcia.

“They are similar,” said the Liverpool manager. “Maybe Luis is a player who scores more goals and Benayoun tends to make more assists.

“Like Luis, he is a very technical, clever player with a lot of game intelligence. He can also play in many positions, giving us a different option for the team.

“He was offered a big new contract at West Ham and received offers from a lot of other clubs offering him more money. But Yossi’s message was always the same. He said he was desperate to only join Liverpool because this was his dream.”

Liverpool’s other major summer recruit, Fernando Torres, is nursing a minor ankle injury, although he took part in training yesterday.

Finnan, meanwhile, is poised to follow the example of Pepe Reina, Momo Sissoko, Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher and Xabi Alonso by signing a new contract.

The 31-year-old Republic of Ireland international has been offered a two-year deal with the option of an extra 12 months.

Elsewhere, Benitez has added to his backroom staff at Melwood with the appointment of Angel Vales as a reserve team coach and head of technical analysis.

The 40-year-old Spaniard has previously been part of the management team in youth development at clubs in Spain and Portugal, and is a doctor of sports science.

Benitez also continues to bolster Liverpool ’s youth set-up with Millwall striker David Amoo the latest to arrive at the Academy yesterday, the Anfield outfit beating a number of leading clubs to the signature of the 17-year-old.

The Academy’s Head of Recruitment Malcolm Elias said: “He’s an exciting young talent with fantastic physical prowess. He’s a natural athlete who possesses great pace and has represented London as a sprinter at the English Schools National Track and Field Championships.”

Liverpool youngsters Martin Hansen and Michael Collins have both signed two-year professional contracts after turning 17.

Goalkeeper Hansen, a part of the club’s Youth Cup winning side last year and a regular for Denmark under-17s, will train at Melwood while Collins, a striker with the Republic of Ireland U17s, is posted at the Academy.
