REDS ON TOUR: DAY 1
Mark Platt in Hong Kong 23 July 2007 |
| Liverpool are in Hong Kong for the 2007 Barclays Asia Cup and the club's official website will be following them every inch of the way. Here's a taste of what's been happening on the trip so far... |
The presence of Liverpool Football Club was enough to lift the gloom of monsoon weather conditions and lengthy flight delays at Heathrow Airport on Saturday evening. On what is genuinely regarded as one of the busiest travelling weekends of the year queues snaked around the airport terminals but the sight of Liverpool's star-studded squad passing through on their way to Hong Kong brought a welcome bit of light relief as holidaymakers temporarily forgot about their missed hours in the sun by queuing for autographs and posing for photographs with their heroes.

Forget John, Paul, George and Ringo. And replace them with Momo, El Nino, Stevie and Carra! The new fab four from Liverpool are coveted wherever they go on Hong Kong Island. In fact, the entire Liverpool squad's every move is being intensely followed over here. Mobile camera crews are running the risk of causing an accident by driving up alongside the team bus, while car loads of screaming locals are never far behind!

Harry Kewell has joined up with the Liverpool squad in Hong Kong earlier than expected following his country's surprise elimination at the quarter-final stage of the Asian Cup. The Aussie winger immediately caught a flight out of Vietnam to join up with his club-mates in time for their first training session at a baking hot Mongkok Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

It was reunion time in the Grand Hyatt Hotel on Sunday night when Portsmouth's ex-Liverpool players David James and Djimi Traore attended a lavish evening reception alongside the current Reds squad. Players and staff from the three competing English clubs were present to launch 2007 Barclays Asia Trophy. A spokesman for the Premier League gave a short speech before Rafael Benitez and Steven Gerrard were photographed with the Trophy, alongside the respective fellow managers and captains.
