We had to spend big to compete - Carragher |
LIVERPOOL vice-captain Jamie Carragher believes the club had no option but to break their transfer record to sign Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres. The club announced the signing of the Spain forward for a fee around £20million – dwarfing the previous record fee of £14m paid out for Djibril Cisse in 2004. Rafael Benitez’s side finished third in the Premier League last season – 21 points behind champions Manchester United – extending their run without the championship to 17 years. And with United and Chelsea investing heavily in talent over the last couple of seasons Carragher said Liverpool had to follow suit if they were to catch up. “If other teams are spending double what you are spending on players they have an advantage on you,” said the England defender. “If we want to bridge that gap we have to go in at the top end of the market.” Carragher is a fan of Torres and believes his style will suit the Premier League. He said: “You have a great pedigree there. “He is a young lad, very quick, which is good for the Premier League and I’m sure he will do very well.” |
