THE Liverpool International Tennis Tournament has pulled off a major coup by signing up Steven Gerrard as an ambassador. The event starts at Calderstones on Thursday and will feature Greg Rusedski and Bjorn Borg, as well as some of the brightest up-and-coming talents of British and world tennis. But organiser Anders Borg was thrilled to announce that Liverpool captain Gerrard will be adding his support to the tournament. He said: “It shows the credibility of the event that we can get someone like Steven Gerrard on board. “He likes the fact that we encourage kids to get to and play in a park, and it’s good for us because we are trying to develop a sport which many see as being played in a snobbish environment. |
“He is a footballer but in terms of the talent he is the final product we’re looking for on the tennis court.
“If he had been spotted playing tennis when he was 10, for example, he would have become a great player because of his athleticism and attitude.
“He is a role model for any sport so it’s great to have him.”
The fact that Gerrard is getting married to Alex Curran on Saturday could prevent him from being able to attend Calderstones this week.
But Borg is excited about the prospect of staging the event for the sixth year.
He added: “We have the biggest tennis exhibition tournament in the world now.”
