Rick Parry: Asian trip needed to keep support

Jul 30 2007

by Ian Doyle, Liverpool Daily Post

A Liverpool fan in Hong Kong kisses the shield

ANYONE who has travelled from Merseyside to Fratton Park will agree it sometimes feels like a 6,012-mile journey.

It’s no secret that Rafael Benitez was not exactly overly enthusiastic at the prospect of making such a lengthy trip to ultimately face Portsmouth in Hong Kong last week.

And while the Liverpool manager probably won’t ever be fully convinced by the merits of the tour, the club can take plenty of encouragement, both short and long-term, from their seven-day stop in the Far East.

The warmth, fanaticism and hysteria with which Liverpool are received in Asia never fails to surprise.

In Hong Kong, where the Anfield side last visited four years ago, the players were feted from the moment they stepped into the airport last Sunday, a section of hardcore fans setting up base camp outside the Grand Hyatt Hotel for the duration of the squad’s stay.

Portsmouth and Fulham may have also travelled to take part in the Barclays Asia Trophy, but Liverpool were the real draw for the public.

The accusation that clubs visiting Asia are often only there for a quick buck and give nothing back in return cannot be levelled at Liverpool.

From coaching sessions with local children to addressing supporters’ clubs, unveiling the new European away kit and numerous other engagements, the players immersed themselves in the Hong Kong community and will have strengthened the bond with fans in the area, even if the likes of Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard saw precious little actual playing time.

Liverpool, in terms of both business and stature, are now a global brand and their new American connection means visits Stateside could well become a more regular occurrence.

However, the need to compete with Manchester United and Chelsea to ensure a prominent standing in the lucrative Asian market mean the Far East remains high on the Anfield pre-season agenda. The inevitable long-term effect of their trip makes it difficult to gauge exactly how much the tour will be worth to Liverpool.

But chief executive Rick Parry admits: “It is the third time we have been out to Asia and it’s one of the most important markets.

“We have tens of millions of fans there and it is a market that we are conscious of and one that we will continue to be aware of, that’s for sure.

“Like United’s support base in Asia, ours goes back at least a couple of generations.

“You have two different types of market in Asia. There is the traditional market who support the club, and then there are those who follow the players individually and they are more fickle.

“We got a big uplift of support when we won the Champions League in 2005, and some of the surveys went through the roof. But it went down a bit over the next two years, so that shows that such surveys aren’t reliable as a long-term guide.

“You have to sustain your support by coming out to the fans. You need to have exposure, and that’s part of the reason why we’ve looked to the television channel. You have to keep contact all year round, and the supporters in Asia are very knowledgeable.

“But much of what you do in Asia stems from success on the pitch and by signing good players and winning things.”

REDS ON TOUR: DAY 7

REDS ON TOUR: DAY 7 Mark Platt (back in Liverpool) 29 July 2007
Liverpool have been in Hong Kong for the 2007 Barclays Asia Cup and the club's official website was following them every inch of the way. Here's a taste of what happened on the seventh and final day of the tour...
*****
It's fair to say the Liverpool squad have spent plenty of time on the coach while in Hong Kong but their twice-daily trips to training and other excursions have been lightened up by the Hong Kong Stan Boardman, aka tour guide Gain. His amusing commentary and corny jokes regularly had the lads in raptures but the less we say about his Prince Charles and the fox's hat gag, the better!
*****
No trip to Hong Kong would be complete without a visit to The Peak and the Liverpool squad whiled away few hours on their last day of the tour by taking a tram ride up to one of Asia's most popular tourist attractions. For those with a fear of heights the steep acsent can be a white-knuckle experience but the Redmen held their nerve before disembarking at the summit to enjoy an excellent last meal on the island.
*****
'Reds Stranded In Shark Infested Waters' could almost have been the sensational newspaper headline you was waking up to this morning. On their way to the airport for the flight home, the squad took a ferry ride around the scenic Hong Kong waterfront. The spectacular views of the neon-lit city skyline were a sight to behold but when the boat overheated and broke down there were a few anxious moments as talk of missing the plane spread. With sharks known to occupy these warm waters, the Jaws-factor meant swimming to the shore was definitely not an option, but, thankfully, the delay was not too long and everyone eventually made it to the airport on time.
*****
Lucas Leiva's joy at joining up with his new team-mates and finally making his Liverpool debut was temporarily tempered when his luggage somehow failed to make it from the hotel to the airport. With clothes and many personal artefacts inside the said bag, the likeable Leiva cut a despondent figure in the depature lounge. Fortunately, just seconds before boarding, the Brazilian was informed that his lost luggage had been found and his usual beaming smile returned.
*****
A Bill Shankly-esque team-talk prepared Liverpool for their BA flight back to Heathrow on Saturday night but it wasn't Rafa doing the talking it was the pilot. In his pre-take off chat to passengers he suddenly began quoting the great man and recited the famous 'matter of life or death' quote!
*****
One of the undoubted highlights of the trip has been the fanaticism of the Asian Reds and their overwhelming support has not gone unappreciated by the players and staff. Wherever Liverpool went during their week-long stay on Hong Kong Island, hundreds of fans were there to give them an enthusiastic greeting. Liverpool head of press Ian Cotton regularly thanked the die-hards who camped outside the team hotel by handing out pin badges, while the entire squad happily posed for photographs and signed autographs at every given opportunity.
*****
Finally, on behalf of everyone at Liverpool Football Club, a big thank-you to the people of Hong Kong for the hospitality they have shown during the tour and to all the fans who were out there supporting the Reds.

Babel & Torres get Reds clearance

Babel & Torres get Reds clearance
Fernando Torres and Ryan Babel
Fernando Torres and Ryan Babel are available for action
Liverpool have been given permission to play new signings Fernando Torres and Ryan Babel in the Asia Trophy final against Portsmouth.

Torres and Babel missed Tuesday's win over South China because they did not have the international clearance.

But record signing Torres and Dutch forward Babel will now be available for selection for Friday's game.

Liverpool will also be able to call upon skipper Steven Gerrard, who has recovered from a stomach problem.

The triple absences on Tuesday disappointed thousands of fans at Hong Kong Stadium and forced Benitez to field a makeshift line-up which toiled to a 3-1 win against the local minnows.

"We had some problems without Torres and Babel," said manager Rafael Benitez.

"Now we have new options and fresh legs, and maybe we can manage the final in a different way.

"Portsmouth will be very difficult to play against but at least we will have more options."

MEET THE MALAYSIAN REDS

MEET THE MALAYSIAN REDS Mark Platt in Hong Kong 25 July 2007
LFC is famed for having supporters all over the world and one of the most passionate hotbeds can be found in Asia. In the second of a special series of features, we spoke to members of the Malaysian Supporters Club.
China July 07
Just how big a club are Liverpool in your part of the world? We all know that Liverpool has a huge following around the world and it’s the same here in Malaysia. Liverpool is one of the most, if not the most followed football club here as the fan base is huge. The amount of people turning up at football matches here just says it all. Tell us a bit about your club, ie how many members, where you gather to watch matches and how many of you will be in Hong Kong to support the Reds? The Liverpool Supporters Club Malaysia (LSCM) was launched in August 2000. Besides being the only Official Liverpool Supporters Club here in Malaysia, we are also a Ticket Based Supporters Club which entitles us to two match tickets for Liverpool's EPL home games and two group tickets (30 tickets per match) in a season. Our main sponsor which we get a lot of support from is none other than Carlsberg Malaysia. Currently we have about 6,000 members who are registered with us and the number is growing. The common activities that we have is Live Viewing Match Parties, Members Night gatherings, yearly trips to Anfield and we also have a football team (LSCM/TSV 1860) that plays in the Business House League here in Malaysia. LSCM also organizes our yearly South East Asia Liverpool Supporters Club Futsal Tournament which involves LSCM and supporters club from Singapore and Indonesia. The one thing that LSCM is proud of is our monthly exclusive members only 'Walk On' magazine which is now in its 7th year in production. We normally have a number of designated Carlsberg outlets (pubs) where we gather to watch Liverpool's matches mainly Breakers, Cafe 1920 and Quality Hotel Shah Alam. For the new season 2007/08, Carlsberg has introduced 50 viewing outlets nationwide where members will get to enjoy special discounts on drinks during matches. For more info, log on to www.lscm.com.my How excited are you by LFC's visit to Hong Kong? It goes without saying how excited we are Liverpool being here in Hong Kong and especially in this part of Asia, where we believe there is true potential in terms of marketing for Liverpool FC. We hope that Liverpool FC will continue to come over, especially to Malaysia because not many fans can afford to travel to the UK to watch them in action. Which players are you looking forward to seeing in action most? I am sure most fans would like to get a glimpse of our new signings Torres and Babel in action but to be honest just watching Liverpool in action for 90 minutes beats almost everything in this world. What more can you ask for? What are your hopes and expectations for the new season? Like all Scousers, we hope for Liverpool to end the long wait for the League title. I am sure that will be the priority for Rafa Benitez and his players, especially Gerrard and Carragher. We also hope that Torres, Babel and Benayoun will be the final pieces of a jigsaw puzzle that will see Liverpool once again conquer English football from all fronts and take their place at the helm of English soccer, where they so rightly belong.

REDS ON TOUR: DAY 3

REDS ON TOUR: DAY 3 Mark Platt in Hong Kong 25 July 2007
Liverpool are in Hong Kong for the 2007 Barclays Asia Cup and the club's official website will be following them every inch of the way. Here's a taste of what's been happening aside from the match on day three of the tour...
Hong Kong Kung-fu
With it being matchday, Liverpool's players enjoyed a rare morning away from the training pitch on Tuesday and took the opportunity to attend a special kung-fu demonstration. The kung-fu experts were only too glad to show off their routines and even invited some audience participation. Don't worry though, we've been promised there'll be no Cantona-esque antics on the Anfield touchline next season!
Hong Kong Kung-fu
*****
A big shout out to the 'Swiggers' and 'Irregulars', two groups of ardent Liverpudlians who travel the length and breadth of the planet to support the Reds. They never miss a game and, as expected, their respective banners were on show at the Hong Kong Stadium last night. For any of the players who might have been feeling a little homesick it was good to know there was a bit of Scouse in the house.
*****
Hong Kong adidas
A quick stroll through one of Hong Kong's shopping districts on Tuesday morning offered conclusive proof that Liverpool are the most popular football club in this part of world. The displays in every sports shop were dominated by the Reds and in terms of replica shirts spotted on the streets the final score was - Liverpool 23, Fulham 1, Barcelona 1.
Hong Kong adidas
*****
There was widespread relief among the Liverpool squad following Tuesday's victory over South China FC. By qualifying for the final it means their next game, against Portsmouth on Friday, will kick-off at 8.15 Hong Kong time and not earlier in the evening when the sun would still be shining and the temperature a lot higher.

Fear of title failure drives Jamie Carragher

Fear of title failure drives Jamie Carragher

Jul 24 2007

by Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

Jamie Carragher in training

JAMIE CARRAGHER admits the fear of missing out on an elusive title triumph will be driving him on for the remainder of his Anfield career.

The Liverpool defender believes the next four years of the contract he signed over the summer will probably determine if he ever claims a Premier League winner’s medal.

Like Steven Gerrard, it’s the one major honour which he hasn’t won, and that’s a reality which continues to haunt him.

Carragher, who will skipper the side against South China in Hong Kong tonight, is confident of a stronger challenge this season, but has warned against the perils of over-expectation.

“I think about missing out on winning the title all the time,” he said. “I know I’ve got plenty of years left in me at Liverpool, but even when you’re at your peak, you start thinking about the time it may start going the other way.

“When I get to the end of this contract, if we still haven’t won the title, it’s natural I’ll be starting to worry about how many chances I’ll have left.

“I’m desperate to realise that ambition of winning a Premiership medal during the course of this contract.

“Football time flies so quickly. It doesn’t seem that long ago people were talking about Stevie and myself as the youngsters who could be part of a successful Liverpool team for a long time.

“Even the three years Rafa has been here have flown. In another three years I’ll be 32 and a few in the Kemlyn Road will be saying I’m finished!”

Gerrard will sit out tonight’s game with a slight muscle problem. It’s not serious and he’s expected to resume training tomorrow.

Harry Kewell has joined the Liverpool squad direct from international duty with Australia.

Also now in Hong Kong with the squad is Liverpool’s Brazilian midfield signing Lucas Leiva.

Lucas has now had passport clearance and was in line to make his debut against South China today.

Reds reach Asia Trophy final

Reds reach Asia Trophy final

By Peter Fraser - Created on 24 Jul 2007

Liverpool set up an Asia Trophy final meeting with Portsmouth after a comfortable 3-1 win over South China.

Portsmouth had already secured their place in the pre-season tournament's showpiece event with a 1-0 win over Fulham and The Reds made sure it will be an all-English affair with their victory.

Goals from John Arne Riise, Xabi Alonso and Daniel Agger handed the Anfield outfit the win, but they did survive a slight scare following a wonder strike from South China's Li Haiqiang.

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez was unable to select Steven Gerrard, who was missing with a groin injury, and new signings Ryan Babel and Fernando Torres, who had not been given international clearance to play, but his side were always in control.

The Reds did not hesitate in demonstrating their comfort and they were soon in front courtesy of a trademark Riise thunderbolt.

The Norwegian left-back claimed ownership of a 10th minute free-kick, centrally placed on the edge of the South China area, and he promptly smashed it through a weak defensive wall to give goalkeeper Zhang Chun Hui no chance.

Liverpool, though, were not completely without worry and they continued to show the shaky signs at the back that have been a reoccurring theme in their pre-season.

Bai He and Lee Chi Ho should have done better with efforts from range for last season's Chinese treble winners and the bustling Brazilian striker Detinho was a handful for Liverpool defenders Jamie Carragher and Agger, but South China never looked like threatening.

On 28 minutes South China coach Jose Luis was ruing his side's missed chances as he watched Liverpool double their lead from another set-play situation.

Alonso played a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Andrei Voronin who, having made inroads into the South China 18-yard area, was hauled down by Sidrailson to give referee Mark Clattenburg little option but to point to the spot.

Spanish midfielder Alonso then stepped forward to coolly dispatch the penalty into the bottom right-hand corner.

However, The Hong Kong Stadium was then on its feet when, with 10 minutes of the half remaining, South China's captain and free-kick specialist Haiqiang curled a spectacular dead-ball past Scott Carson in the Liverpool goal from 40 yards.

The game continued in much the same vein after the interval with Momo Sissoko aggravating the home fans with his persistently physical, but fair, style of play and with Liverpool content to keep controlled possession.

Centre-back Agger rose well to head on target from a Jermaine Pennant, who looked lively after replacing Harry Kewell, corner as the Reds totally dominated.

Agger, though, did not have to wait long for his goal when he robbed Flavio Barros on 74 minutes before continuing his run forward to meet a Dirk Kuyt lay-off to secure the victory with his left foot.

REDS ON TOUR: DAY 2

REDS ON TOUR: DAY 2 Mark Platt in Hong Kong 24 July 2007
Liverpool are in Hong Kong for the 2007 Barclays Asia Cup and the club's official website will be following them every inch of the way. Here's a taste of what's been happening on day two of the tour...
Hong Kong Stadium
The Reds paid their first visit to the Hong Kong Stadium on Monday night where they held an opening training session in full view of the press. Given the fact that the sun had gone down it was probably the most comfortable run-out the players have enjoyed since being here, although it was hardly what you'd call cool – the stadium thermometer confirming that temperature was still around 33 degrees centigrade.
*****
The fanatical Asian Liverpudlians continue to besiege the team hotel and it seems they've discovered an unlikely new hero. 'Robbie, Robbie', was the shout as the players boarded the coach for training on Monday evening and it was only after a quick look around to make sure Robbie Fowler hadn't made a dramatic return to the club that we realised the subject of their attention was a sheepish looking Robbie Threlfall. Like a good pro, the young defender took this new found adulation in his stride, then received a good-natured ribbing from the senior players once on the coach!
*****
Staying on the subject of the fans. They were certainly in fine voice yesterday, serenading the players whenever they stepped foot out of the hotel. From Johnny Cash's 'Ring of Fire' to 'Fields of Anfield Road' they worked their way through an impressive repertoire of Kop classics. The sound was, shall we say, not quite the same as on an Anfield matchday but ten out of ten for effort. PS: Rumours that they're about to form an Asian branch of RTK are, as yet, unconfirmed!
*****
Steven Gerrard is no stranger to signing autographs but even he looked bemused when a local guy approached him during an evening workout at the gym and asked him to sign a bowling pin!
*****
Bearing in mind that not a lot is known about Liverpool's next opponents, South China FC, you'd surprised to discover that there are a couple of links between the two clubs. Some older fans may recall the name Tim Bredbury (pictured below). Tim was born in Hong Kong to British parents and was an apprentice at Anfield in the late seventies/early eighties. Upon returning home after leaving Liverpool, South China was one of the many clubs he played for. He popped into the team hotel yesterday for a chat and we'll be publishing an interview with him later in the week. A more recent connection relates to current first team coach Alex Miller who spent a short spell with South China towards the end of his playing career. Both are listed among South China's most notable players on Wikipedia, while Alex also stepped briefly into the breach as player/coach of the club.

MEET THE HONG KONG REDS

MEET THE HONG KONG REDS Mark Platt in Hong Kong 23 July 2007
LFC is famed for having supporters all over the world and one of the most passionate hotbeds can be found in Asia. In the first of a special series of features, we spoke to members of the Hong Kong Supporters Club.
Hong Kong fans
Just how big a club are Liverpool in your part of the world? People in Hong Kong are crazy for the English Premier League, with Manchester United and Liverpool being the most popular teams. Owing to their success in the past ten years, Manchester United has accumulated a heavy base of fans over here. Although we are still waiting for the 19th league title, the tradition and history of the club are still adored by many fans in Hong Kong and we are really proud of it. Tell us a bit about your club, ie how many members, where you gather to watch matches and how many of you will be in the Hong Kong Stadium to support the Reds? We are established in July 1999 and obtained the official supporters club status in 2003 (shortly before Liverpool's HK tour that year). We have around 500 members for the 06/07 season and the number is still on the rise, although we have stopped membership application in the closed season. Throughout the season we will gather to watch the 'big' games in the bars, cafe, karaoke or restaurants where there is big screen. As a matter of fact, nearly 500 of us were gathered at two bars in Wanchai, Hong Kong, to watch the Champions League Final in Athens (our record number of attendants). During the night, we connected with fans who were at Athens to tell us the live atmosphere in the stadium. As we were only able to secure tickets from the club ten hours before tickets go to public sales, many of our members have queued up outside the stadium for over 12 hours in order to purchase a ticket themselves. Now on the match day we will have 300 members in the allocated area to cheer for the team but we are sure the stadium will be filled with our fans everywhere. How excited are you by Liverpool's visit to Hong Kong? We have been excited by the news since rumours began saying LFC will be coming to HK again. Certainly we are looking forward to meeting the team again. It is sad to us that God and King Luis have left because they are heroes in our hearts. We have prepared a banner for Robbie during our CL final gathering to collect fans' signatures and have it sent to the club in the hope that this could have persuaded Fowler to come to HK before he leaves the club - realistically we knew this was only a dream but it didn't stop us. We have a series of activities to welcome the team. A week ago some of us worked together to make some banners and we have some souvenirs for our members to commemorate LFC's tour, including T-shirts, postcards, badges and stickers. We were in the airport to welcome the team and, thanks to assistance of different parties, our members have the privilege to join an autographs session this Wednesday and have the chance to take photo with some of the players. We have urged the fans to make the Hong Kong Stadium like the Kop during the match days. Which players are you looking forward to seeing in action most? We would like to see the whole team but the two homegrown stars, Steve Gerrard and Jamie Carragher should be the men we are looking forward to seeing. This is the second time they are coming and we are glad to see them again. Of course there are also the new signings, Torres, Benayoun, Voronin and Babel. It is just unfortunate that Javier Mascherano will not come because of the Copa America. What are your hopes and expectations for the new season? If we can mount a serious challenge to the Premiership title we would all be happy. The performance in the Europe has been over our expectations to be honest and, hopefully, we will be heading to Moscow next year. With signings like Torres, we hope Rafa has got a team he is satisfied with and that we can play some attractive football.
